Massive Nut
Massive Nut Quick Assembly Guide
Assembly Video: Protip: If you notice excessive wobble, check that the gaps between all edges are evenly spaced. When installing each edge, push the Edge to one side of the central hub slot before tightening it down. Repeat this step for all 6 Edges. See troubleshooting below for more details.
Tools included: 1× hex (Allen) wrench
Optional tools: credit card (or coin) for extra leverage, small nylon brush, cloth
Before you start: work on a flat, well-lit surface. Keep the small bolts and wrench handy.
Step-by-step assembly
1. Unbox & orient the hub
- Remove all components from the foam insert and organize them on your workspace.
- Orient the Massive Nut so the arrows etched on the hub are facing down on the table.
2. Remove the center ring (access the inside)
- The center retaining ring (the ring with the slots) can be unscrewed by hand. Grip the hexagon body firmly, holding the bottom ring (closer to the product logo) in place to prevent it from spinning freely.

- Now grip the top ring (farther from the product logo). Using your fingers, or a credit card or coin inserted into one of the slots for extra leverage, gently rotate the top ring counter-clockwise to unscrew it from the bottom ring.

- Once the center ring is removed, you’ll have access to the Edge slots and bolt hole locations. Note: The bearing is pre-installed inside the hub and does not need to be removed for normal assembly.
Tips: Avoid prying or pushing too hard with a coin or tool - the center ring threads are precision-machined and the surface finish can be damaged by excessive force. You can also apply light counter-rotation on the opposite side of the hub to make unscrewing easier.
3. Choose & insert your Edges
- Decide on an order. We recommend either:
- Coarse → Fine (coarsest to finest going around the hub), or
- Fine → Coarse (if you prefer starting fine) - both work.
- Slide only ONE Edge into a slot - they are drilled and tapped to be bolted in only one way.
4. Secure the Edge with a bolt
- Place the selected Edge and hexagon hub on a flat surface or with your thumb, apply constant pressure to ensure it is properly seated.
- Each Edge has a threaded hole that lines up with a bolt hole in the nut wall. From the inside of the hub, feed one of the small bolts through the hole in the nut wall and into the threaded hole in the installed Edge.

- Start the bolt gently so it threads easily and is aligned. This prevents cross-threading. Double check the Edge is fully seated in it's slot.
5. Tighten using the hex wrench (correct method)
- Insert it into the bolt head and apply steady force. (Tip: The first three Edge bolts can be tightened by inserting the wrench from the opposite hexagon wall bolt hole - the remaining three can be tightened using the provided wrench at an angle or using the short end)
- Tighten until the bolt is snug. You want the Edge secure but do not over-torque - fully hand-tight plus one small incremental turn is sufficient. Over-tightening can strip the threads or make future disassembly difficult.
- Repeat steps 4–5 for each Edge slot until all six Edges are installed and all bolts are snug.
6. Reinstall the center ring
- Once all Edges are installed and tightened, re-thread the center ring (clockwise) until it seats. Hand-tighten fully - it should feel secure with no significant rattling of parts. You can use a credit card for a final slight snug, but keep it hand-tight.
- Give the hub a gentle spin between your fingers to confirm the bearing spins smoothly and nothing rubs or binds. If you hear rubbing, remove the center ring and check Edge seating and that the bolt heads are fully seated against the hexagon wall.
- Protip: If you experience any wobble when nutting, make sure the gaps between all the Edges are even. If you notice a larger gap, loosen the two Edges on either side of it, push them toward each other, and retighten. This closes the machining tolerances between the components and eliminates the wobble.
Maintenance & cleaning
- Cleaning the file teeth: Use a nylon brush or old toothbrush to clear filings from the teeth. For stubborn residue, a small wire brush works but use care to avoid damaging coatings.
- Bearing care: The bearings are sealed for protection. If you decide to service them, remove the center ring and take care not to overheat or contaminate the seal. A small drop of light bearing oil on the outside shield (if removable) can help, but sealed bearings typically require minimal maintenance.
- Bolt re-check: Periodically (especially after heavy use) check bolt tightness - just snug them up as necessary.
Troubleshooting
- Wobbles when nutting: If you notice excessive wobble, check that the gaps between all edges are evenly spaced. When installing each edge, push the Edge to one side of the central hub slot before tightening it down. Repeat this step for all 6 Edges. See troubleshooting below for more details.
- Bolt won’t thread: Back the bolt out, confirm alignment of the Edge’s threaded hole, and start again by hand. Do not force. Ensure constant pressure is being applied to the Edge while screwing the bolt in.
- Spinning binds or rubs: Remove the center ring and bolts, inspect Edge seating and bolt head protrusion.
- Edge loose after use: Small bolts can loosen over time with heavy use - re-tighten gently using the hex wrench.
Disassembly notes
- To disassemble, remove the center ring, back out the bolts with the hex wrench, and slide out the Edges. Keep bolts in a safe place.
Safety
- The Edges are hardened steel files - avoid contact with bare skin when handling sharp grits. Wear gloves if needed.
- Keep bolts and small parts away from children.
